Habitat for Humanity Ireland

www.habitatireland.ie

Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 in Americus, Georgia by a group of people who envisioned that:

‘ What the poor need is not charity but capital, not caseworkers but co-workers ‘

Working in Partnership

This group developed the concept of partnership housing — where those in need of adequate shelter would work side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent houses.

Habitat for Humanity now works in nearly 100 countries and has built more than 350,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1.75 million people with simple, decent, affordable homes.

Home:

Habitat for Humanity wants to make a difference in Ireland not just by building and renovating affordable housing but by empowering people to take pride in homeownership by being actively involved in building and improving there local community.

In the current economic climate mortgages are even harder to come by for those on low income. There is urgent demand for simple, decent, low cost affordable housing in urban areas.

Abroad:

Habitat for Humanity Ireland supports the international efforts of Habitat for Humanity by sending teams of Irish volunteers overseas to help build homes through its Global Village programme. Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village programme has been in operation since 2004 and in that time has sent almost 1,250 volunteers to over 20 different countries in Africa, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe, raising over $2.88 million USD and building over 750 homes. Teams of volunteers come from schools, the corporate sector, universities and community groups as well as groups of individuals. Volunteers travel for two weeks to the host country, helping with the construction of the local houses, getting to know the local communities and cultures and raising funds for the host programme.

Castle Palooza Festival 2010

Charleville Castle in Tullamore is much more than just another festival venue. This 17th century castle is situated in the middle of Ireland and is hidden away within Ireland’s most ancient primordial oak woods.

Ticket holders have exclusive daily access to the castle, where there are art exhibitions; workshops; a Day Spa and possibly some surprise performances.

Castlepalooza offers a unique opportunity to set foot inside a beautiful Medieval castle, walk through its restored rooms and unwind in front of the roaring fires.

As always, part of the ticket proceeds go towards the Charleville Castle restoration project – helping to keep this historic landmark alive.

St Conleth's Project Uganda

St Conleth’s College, Dublin Ireland / Kitatya School, Kayunga, Uganda Project St Conleth’s College is involved in a 5-year project with Kitatya Secondary School in Kayunga, Uganda, which started in 2009
The Kitatya School receives very little assistance from the Ugandan Government and is severely lacking in facilities. The school is located just outside a town called Kayunga (an hour and a half away from Kampala). It had 400 students (Mixed) in July last year and they hope to have 500 by the time our students go over in June 2010. Out of that 400 only 100 students eat during the school day. There are 25 boy boarders at the school.
Kitatya School has the capability of bringing their student’s to the equivalent of Leaving Cert level but cannot provide science beyond Junior Cert level due to a lack of facilities, equipment and textbooks. The first phase St Conleth’s fund raising will help provide the financial resources to build a dormitory for the teachers, many of whom have to travel great distances from home to the school and this will ensure constant teacher cover for the students.
St Conleth’s has linked up with a charity: Self Help Africa – Ireland to co-ordinate and support the building work. The next phase of the project will be to equip a science lab, which will allow the Kitatya students to complete their second level education.
What we hope to do in June 2010!
In addition to the fundraising in Ireland, St Conleth’s students will share their skills in English Language, Science, IT and Sport. Kitatya’s students will share their skills in Music, Dance and Planting. Initially, the St Conleth’s students will meet and collaborate with the Kitatya students and plan the week’s activities. There are 44 students going on this project. They are divided into 3 groups who will each spend one week in the school before handing over to the next group. It is not possible for all the students to remain on the project at the same time due to the lack of facilities.
The St Conleth’s students will give gifts to their hosts at the end of each week. On completion of the project work, the group will travel to Kilembe where they will spend the following days trekking on the Kilembe Buwata Community Trail, Ruccochi Falls, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Ruzongo, through villages and crater lakes returning to Kampala for rest and re-stock for the next phase.
The students then travel on to trek up Mt Elgon travelling to Mbale/Budadiri Mt Elgon – Sasa river camp, Mude Cave and trek up to Jackson’s Summit (4165m) in preparation for the summit attempt on Wagagai Peak (4321m). The group will return by way of the Sipi Falls to Kampala. This project and the whole experience of Uganda will help the students develop life skills in Communication, Teamwork & Leadership, Enterprise & Money Management and Personal presentation and enrich their lives and hopefully the lives of those they meet on this amazing journey.

There is a 15% discount for St Conleth’s students available in Capel Camping  www.capelcamping.com

OXEGEN Festival Tips

Each year, Oxegen organisers listen to fans’ feedback and look to improve their OXEGEN experience. So there are some fantastic additions this year.

There’ll be lots more seating areas around the campsite. Picnic benches will be dotted around the site so that you can take the weight off your feet and sit and natter with your friends. There’ll also be a number of open air barbeque areas for fans to enjoy. But remember, only disposable barbeques are permitted on site and can only be used in the designated BBQ areas – just don’t forget the sausages!

You also asked us whether there was any way of charging your mobiles. So now we’re also offering new phone recharging facilities which means that your mobile should never run out of juice.

Many of you have asked about safeguarding of personal property on site. Lockerhouse will offer improved locker facilities in the campsites this year.

Lockerhouse’s Security Personal Items Lockers will hold small items such as wallets, passport, prescription medication and phones etc. Plus they also have a 12v cigarette style power outlet for you to charge your phone, MP3 player or camera! The lockers are open and security managed 24 hrs a day. CCTV is also fitted for added security of your belongings. To book your personal locker, visit www.lockerhouse.co.uk/events.asp

It will be easier for fans to navigate around the site and find their tents. Bui Bolg, the guys who brought the giant OXEGEN Stonehenge style entrance arch are back and they’re placing 20 weird and wonderful pop art items throughout the campsite so that you will always be able to use them to help find where your friends are! These will include everything from lemon wedges, skateboards and a space invader! Don’t forget to bring spare tent pegs, baby wipes are handy for those too tired to use the showers. As well as your beer don’t forget to drink plenty of water as the body becomes very dehydrated even on a cloudy day…

Music Festival Season in Ireland

The 2010 festival season is almost upon us and this year there are more and more festivals to attend. Apart from the two big ones Oxegen and Electric Picnic more and more people are travelling abroad to similar Eoropean festivals such as Glastonbury, Valencia and there’s a huge 3 day gig in Denmark. Also we find lots of people are heading to Eastern Europe especially Hungary and Czech Republic where the line up is the same as Oxegen but prices are cheaper and you’re nearly guaranteed sun. Don’t get stuck with a cheap and nasty supermarket tent when you can go to a good outdoor store for a quality product for a similar price. Check these out
